What is a Debt Management Program?

Also referred to as Debt Consolidation. This program is designed to help individuals who have greater than $5000.00 in Credit Card Debt, have high interest rates and realize they are now in what is commonly referred to as a “Pay for Life Program”. In other words, because your interest rates are so high it could take you as long as 18 years to payoff the debt by making just minimum payments. The Debt Management Program will allow you to make one monthly payment at reduced interest rates and have the debt paid in full, generally, in less than 5 years. Also, creditors will generally waive overlimit fees and reage the account (bring it current if you were behind”) after a period of 3 to 6 months of being on the program. It is not unusual for your present monthly payment to be lower in a Debt Management Program than your current payments combined. This program is voluntary, there is no prepayment penalty and your participation is not a scoring component of your credit score.

How long will it take me to get out of debt in a Debt Settlement Program?

You decide. The length of time dependends on the monthly payment, which is determined by what you can afford.

How will I know my payments are going to my creditors?

In a Debt Management Program you will continue to receive your monthly statements from each creditor which will show your monthly payments being applied. In addition you will have a customer service person assigned to you, for any ongoing help you may need. In a Debt Settlement Program your funds are not paid to your creditors each month, they go into a Trust fund account. As the money accumulates settlements are made with each creditor. You can track your payments online through the Law centers website.

Can I continue to use my credit cards while in the program?

Any credit cards put into the Debt Management program will be closed. If you enroll in the Debt Settlement program they are most likely already closed. Our counselors will advise you on perhaps keeping one or two cards off the program for emergencies.

Do I need to Qualify for These Programs?

Debt Settlement and Debt Management are both non-qualifying programs, with the following exceptions: You must have at least $5000.00 of Debt to take advantage of either program and for debt settlement you must be behind on your payments or not be a candidate for debt management.

How will this effect my credit and credit report?

A debt management program is not a factor in the calculation of your credit score. While in and of itself it will not effect your score, it is possible some creditors will place a statement on your report that says ”account managed by dmp”, this statement is also not a factor in your credit scoring. Your credit cards will be closed to further charging in this program and this will probably lower your credit score. If you are a candidate for debt audit/debt settlement your credit score is most likely not optimum due to your inability to maintain ontime payments. As settlements are made your credit report will read "account settled as agreed", and with the debt resolved, if you continue good payment patterns will begin to improve. Also, as part of the settlements some creditors may remove negatives from your report as settlements are made.

Are these programs like filing for Bankruptcy?

Absolutely not. Many people do not qualify for bankruptcy or have other reasons why they choose not to file for a bankruptcy. In our opinion a Bankruptcy should be the solution of last resort.
